a near death event
a pairing: Aotearoa - Land of the Long White Cloud, by George Gray
rip(tide) at Long Beach
the coursing current
hidden rip beneath
propelled my board
along with this
redundant paddler
sun-gulled me
beyond the breakers:
soon to be
carrion surfer
buoyed by eternity
inexorably drawn
to purgatory:
Alaska
Hokkaido
Aotearoa
such a wild metaphor:
life pulled
by tidal ignorance:
naïve punter me
horizontal Icarus
believing
the distance out
all but wills
the thrill in
I was too far gone
but for the providence
of a glimpse: yes
it felt special: spying
the last treetops
about to unhelm
the Pacific:
one blessed chance
under a sinking sun
to make a turn

Cross beams, long filled white sails above
carry on the body board beyond horizon rise
Dolphin Curls, churns fins
shore length safe, surfer's friend.
Another answer. Maybe.
A long White Cloud comes.
A hand reach out.
