The first photo has the feeling of an Edward Gorey drawing. And I am delighted at the suggestion in your poem that the gulls are leaving their shadows behind.
The pairing of haiku with photographs is such a delightful art, the interplay of images and words is beautiful. Do you always write the poems in response to the photos? Or do you ever take a photo to fit a poem? I always do the former, but I like the idea of the latter.
Ah same. I take photos then let them speak to me if they so wish! I do also pair my writing with art, not my own, and there I will sometimes find a piece to fit the poem. Either way the interplay is rewarding, I find. Thanks so much for your appreciation, Melanie! Best in 2026.
profoundly simple, simply profound ;)
Appreciate that, B!
These haikus and photos seem simple, but they are deeply complex.
Thanks, Rolando! Glad to hear that from you.
They take my breath away. Absolutely beautiful. I also love the poetry. Nice way to begin the new year. And end the old year.
Much appreciated, A.
Imagine the haikus will continue their expression throughout 2026 and beyond.
I would really love to have a book of these.
Each one, so quietly perfect on its own, and the combined effect is also a joy to read.
Oh thank you, Ann! I’ve been mulling ideas for a book, now that I have more time. Your suggestion is most welcome.
