Last month at the Writer Pilgrim Substack, Writer Pilgrim by So Elite asked us to write poems made up of song titles from a particular artist. One I didn’t attempt at the time (because I chose Steely Dan for S) was American singer-songwriter, Elliott Smith (1969-2003), whose music I’ve always loved. Video below of him singing one of his best tunes.
Elliott Smith villanelle
between the bars
let’s get lost—
a distorted reality is now
a necessity to be free
last call
drive all over town
between the bars
looking over my shoulders
seen how things are hard—
a distorted reality is now
a necessity to be free
the biggest lie
ballad of big nothing
between the bars
pictures of me
a question mark—
a distorted reality is now
a necessity to be free
either/or
twilight
between the bars—
a distorted reality is now a
necessity to be free
A great tune, wow! And goes without saying equally great poem! I came across this post out of luck today. Didn't get notification of the shoutout or mention. So huge thank you for the mention. Another artist I know nothing about and glad to be acquainted! Thank you man.
I live for beautifully written poetry with unique formatting.
