man with teddy bear In David Hurn’s photograph the bus stop ad says: think of a number and standing right there is the man with the teddy bear a middle-aged man balding hatless and wearing an overcoat for it has been raining the street slick with rainwater and he is holding the bear with one arm it is wrapped in a small blanket or shawl as if for warmth like it’s a child and he is pressing it to his chest its cheek snug against his own his eyes open yet shut to the world as if turned inward to dream remember escape and as the rain resumes tiny droplets stream down his forehead to his eyes where briefly they well before being absorbed into fur and foam and the number that came to me was random enough for me to consider that someone thought it possible to read another man’s mind.
