While visiting his ex-fiancée, Midge, Scottie makes an early attempt to face his fear of heights. The window view of San Francisco in the background suggests the apartment is on an upper floor. So it might not be wise for Scottie to turn around. The master of suspense strikes again! vertigo 2 I'll not exalt the exhilaration of freefall— the lowest of highs abets vertigo: step stool or ladder reels the room— footbridge, double decker bus; chairlift, escalator. Instead, I plead: mundane gravity, the ground I tread on, hold me fast—don’t climb onto balconies, up towers, eiffel, babel, bell, scottie stalking his madeleine to a precipitous end. Just lay me out, lay me down, flush with your loamy heart, my bedrock earth bed, firm grass growing soft and softer— For I have no need to fall (from where?), at least not for you, my love, my ground— I’m already there. What a wonderful love poem. Such a build/fall to “My ground, my love.” 🌹
A suspension bridge would be my downfall.
